The day Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal died, there was an outpouring of grief from four communities: the Muslims, the Jews, the Christians, and the Magians; and of the latter three, twenty thousand—or, as reported by Abū Nuʿaym, ten thousand—embraced Islam.480 87.1
